With the release of MacOS Sierra by Apple, you might have opted to update your Mac machine with that new OS especially if your gadget ecosystem revolves on the Apple-sphere of things. Upon completing the long wait of downloading the OS update and its installation, you may think at first that everything seems to work fine. Once you attached your NTFS hard drive thinking it will be a routine access to your files, you notice that it goes back to a 'read-only' file explorer view even if you have Tuxera installed.
I got my copy of Tuxera from purchasing Toshiba's external USB3.0 hard drives that included the said software, specifically the Canvio Connect II. The drive is a sweet deal for the price + Tuxera, especially the fact that it doesn't care whether you use your Toshiba external drive or any other brand (boooo to WD and Seagate).
Tuxera NTFS for Mac still ships with Tuxera Disk Manager which helps you format and repair your NTFS drives in macOS Sierra, OS X El Capitan, and previous versions of OS X. In the release history page you will find a summary listing all the major changes and improvements to our NTFS driver for Mac. Aug 13, 2014 Paragon NTFS For Mac 2016 (Para los piojos) Carmen Guerra. What I initially did and the error I got The usual course of action to fix Tuxera after a major MacOS software update is to just reinstall it. So I have a copy of the '.dmg' installer of Tuxera somewhere within my directories and proceeded to run it. Once the installer was mounted and clicked on the installer icon, I suddenly got this error prompt about an 'Error 1 while launching Tuxera NTFS..'. At first I thought that my installer was perhaps corrupted so I accessed the installer inside my Toshiba HDD, but that was an older variant (2014 I think). When I used that version and after the installer ran smoothly, as expected it didn't work on Sierra. I initially sought help from Tuxera (via email support) but they told me to ask Toshiba for a solution/fix. Not seeing an email support from Toshiba US, I tried their Twitter account to no avail as well. This left me no choice but to MacGyver my way out of this predicament. The Fix This guide of mine is to fix your Tuxera installation on your MacOS Sierra if your license came from your Toshiba HDD. Tuxera Ntfs For MacStep 1a: Go to the support page of Toshiba and download the updated Tuxera for Mac installerTuxera Ntfs For Mac 2016.1 TntThe installer published in this support website will only work if you own any of the following Toshiba external hard drives:
Step 1b: Specify a different download destination for the Tuxera for Mac installer When downloading the '.dmg' installer, don't just save it in your 'Downloads' folder. I suggest you save it to your 'Desktop'. This is an important step as this is somewhat related to the error. Step 2: Disable Gatekeeper To disable Gatekeeper and 'Allow apps from anywhere', follow the instructions from this website.. http://dispatchist.com/macos-sierra-gatekeeper-run-applications-anywhere/ Step 3: Run the installer Once you have finished downloading the Tuxera installer and saved it elsewhere (your Desktop), mount and run the installer as normally as you would in previous versions. Step 4: Keep your Toshiba external HDD at-hand When you're already inside the installer and doing the usual clicking of the 'Next' button, connect your Toshiba external HDD. This will enable the Tuxera installer to detect the hardware and activate the Toshiba-Tuxera license. Step 5: Restart your Mac and enjoy Yes you need to restart it so that it will properly load and use the NTFS driver The reason behind the error After much digging on why the said installer kept giving me that error was because of a particular feature that Apple included in the Sierra OS, which is something called the 'Gatekeeper'. The purpose of the Gatekeeper was to provide another means of security to prevent users from using installers that may contain malicious workarounds/exploits. It also generates a random file path for the application to be installed wherein I'm not really sure why but it is also part of the security and application digital signing. The Tuxera 2015.2 version was published for the El Capitan didn't have that Gatekeeper functionality. When you run the same installer in MacOS Sierra and the '.dmg' installer was saved inside the Downloads folder, this will screw-up the packaging of the Tuxera installer as it doesn't play ball with that Gatekeeper. OUR STORY
We started out as just a few developers working separately on open-source NTFS file system development during the 1990s. Today we’ve grown to a team of over 90 people solving embedded Linux challenges for customers all over the world. Our founders chose the name “Tuxera” to reflect their belief that “Tux” (the Linux penguin’s name) would be the cornerstone of the new “era” of embedded development.
It all began with two Linux fans
Our story starts with Szabolcs Szakacsits (or just Szaka as we call him), a Hungarian developer. Szaka’s passion for Linux began in the 90s while he was working for a Hungarian company collaborating with Rubik’s (of Rubik’s Cube fame). In 1999, he set off for Finland – the birthplace of Linux – to work for F-Secure, and began studying the NTFS file system.
Meanwhile in London, Anton Altaparmakov, then at Cambridge University, began his own development work on the NTFS for the Linux kernel project with the hopes of getting read-write access to his own Windows documents on Linux.

During the early to mid 2000s, Szaka continued studying NTFS technology in his free time as a one-man project in Finland. By 2007, Szaka had established a technical project website for NTFS-3G – through which people began requesting a commercial version, plus associated support. He stayed in Finland, but left F-Secure for Ericsson.
Back in London, the Linux NTFS project had changed hands completely to Anton in 2000. By 2002, Anton had completely rewritten the NTFS driver. Later in 2006, Apple hired him to write an NTFS driver for Mac OS X. But he continued to work with Linux NTFS on the side, supporting one customer.
Then along came the professor
In 2008, Szaka sought the advice of Mikko Välimäki, a professor at Helsinki University of Technology and legal expert on open-source issues. They met to discuss over drinks in a local Helsinki bar. That night, the passion to build a business based on Szaka’s development work and Linux consulting was born. Later, Szaka’s project was incorporated as a Finland-based company, NTFS-3G Technology.
2009
NTFS-3G Technology name changed to Tuxera
Key NTFS developers joined
Licensing agreements forged with Microsoft
The era of Tux begins
Mikko and Szaka sought out key developers working with open-source NTFS technology, bringing Anton on board. Later that year, they reached a fast and friendly legal agreement with Microsoft to develop business around Microsoft’s NTFS technology. The deal also included a licensing agreement for another Microsoft file system technology, exFAT, and thus Tuxera exFAT development began.
Ntfs For Mac
NTFS-3G Technology was eventually renamed to Tuxera Inc. with Mikko as CEO, Szaka as President and CTO, and Anton as Lead File System Developer. By the end of 2009, they had one embedded customer in the US, two products (including Tuxera NTFS for Mac), a one-room office in Espoo, Finland, and two new developers: Erik Larsson and Jean-Pierre André. The company also joined its first key industry association – the SD Association.

In 2010, the company began hiring sales and BD talents for the Asian markets, alongside technical talent. Offices in Sunnyvale, USA and Taipei, Taiwan were also established. Tuxera’s product portfolio expanded to include Tuxera HFS+ and Tuxera FAT, and our software shipped in a growing volume of consumer electronics.
By 2011, new offices in Seoul, Korea and Beijing, China were opened. The team nurtured partnerships with major chipset companies. Onward into 2012, Tuxera software was powering some of the most popular Android phones, plus in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) in cars. By then, Tuxera had grown to about 10 employees at HQ, plus sales consultants in the offices abroad. The company rounded off the year with the Deloitte Technology Fast Award.

Rocketing upwards
Between 2013–2014, the team’s hard work solving customer storage challenges paid off – Tuxera gained position as the global market leader in file systems technology. In 2013, Tuxera FAT for Android and Linux were revamped, the AllConnect app was launched, and the company joined JEDEC. To accommodate an expanding team of about 30, HQ was moved to Helsinki.
By 2014 the AllConnect SDK was launched, and development of Tuxera Flash File System began. The company was also recognized as the 5th fastest growing software company in the Deloitte Fast 500 EMEA listing. When 2015 came around, our software was inside drones, and we started developing Tuxera SMB. Our people remained positive – Tuxera was recognized as one of the best places to work in Finland for 2015.

Tuxera grew to a mid-sized company with around 70 employees worldwide. What’s more, we were recognized as a Great Place to Work Finland – only this time ranking among the top ten! Plus, our FAT+ technology was announced as a file system standard for UFS storage.
In 2018, we rebranded our core product portfolio into GravityCS, VelocityFS, and Fusion File Share.
The following year, 2019, saw us joining forces with North American flash file systems developer Datalight, for a truly comprehensive data management portfolio.
